INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Important:Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE beginning the installation. What's Included:
- 1 housing unit with retractable barrier
- 1 receiving bar
- 4 flat head screws
- 2 mounting screws
- 1 Allen wrench (for set screw if needed)
What You'll Need
- A pencil
- A level
- A drill
- A 3/16" drill bit (mounting screws)
- A 5/64" drill bit (flat head screws)
- A Phillip's Head screw driver
- An awl or nail
- A hammer
Due to the large number of variations of door jamb designs it is impossible to give absolute instructions for mounting the housing unit onto a door jamb. The instructions that follow are universal to mounting the housing unit to most door jambs.
Housing Unit – Mounted on the door jamb
- The retractable side must:
- Be facing the door opening; AND
- Positioned on the door jamb so the door opens freely without touching the unit (this may or may not be the center of the door jamb)
- Ideally position the barrier no more than 1" off of floor surface when slid onto the mounting screws
- Mounted so no side to side play or wobble is allowed – should fit snuggly on the door jamb*
- Distance between mounting screws should be equal to the distance between the top of the slide loops on the back of the housing unit (see illustration below)
- Use a level to assure a true vertical mounting
- Use an awl or nail and hammer to make pilot holes to assure proper drilling spots
- Drill holes to receive mounting screws
- Screw mounting screws into the drilled holes on the door jamb
*NOTE: The housing unit should fit snugly on the door jamb. If there is any “play or wobble" between the door jamb and the housing unit adjust the screws accordingly. If the housing unit is too loose remove the housing unit and advance the screws farther into the jamb. If the housing unit does not slide into position because it is hung up on the screws (i.e. screws are too tight into the door jamb) then retract the screws slightly to allow the unit to slide on snuggly. These adjustments are normal because there are several types of door jambs.

The Receiving Bar – Mounted on the door
To Function Properly – The Receiving Bar must be parallel to the mounted housing unit. It is also important that the receiving bar is not positioned too closely to the edge of the door. Attaching the receiving bar too close to the edge of the door will compromise the ease of hooking the barrier attachment bar to the receiving bar.
- On the bottom half of the door, under the door handle, measure approximately 3" in from edge of door and mark a placement spot.
- Using a level, draw a vertical line from the placement spot in Step 1 to within a foot of the floor. This will be the line for mounting the receiving bar.
- Using the handle on the barrier attachment bar, protruding from the mounted housing unit, extend the barrier to the vertical line drawn on the door.
- Using the pencil, make a small mark on the door at the top edge of the barrier material. (This is the top edge positioning mark for the receiving bar).
- Allow the barrier to retract into the housing unit.
With the curve of the receiving bar toward the mounted housing unit – and the top edge of the receiving bar at the positioning mark made in Step 4
- Align the curved edge of the receiving bar along the vertical line drawn in Step 2 so the vertical line is slightly visible on the curve edge. If done properly this should position the housing unit and the receiving bar parallel to each other. BOTH PIECES NEED TO BE PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER FOR EASY USE.
- Using the pencil make a mark through the holes on the receiving bar where the screws will be introduced.
- Use an awl or nail and hammer to make pilot holes to assure proper drilling spots
- Drill holes to receive flat head screws
- Align the receiving bar over the drilled holes and secure tightly into place with flat head screws provided.
The Pet Barrier is now ready for use.
How To Use The Pet Barrier™
ALWAYS ENGAGE OR DISENGAGE THE PET BARRIER™ WHEN THE DOOR IS IN A CLOSED POSITION
To Engage
- Grasp the handle on the barrier attachment bar (protruding from the mounted housing unit on the door jamb).
- Gently draw the barrier attachment bar over the barrier receiving bar that is secured to the door.
- Hook the curved portion of each bar together and release the handle.
- Open the door to draw the self-contained barrier from the housing unit. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR PAST THE RED LINE INDICATED ON THE BARRIER (approximately 3 feet). Extending the barrier beyond the red line may damage the ability of the barrier to retract.
- Close the door and the barrier automatically retracts back into the housing unit.
Once The Pet Barrier™ is engaged it will automatically draw and retract each time you open and close the door. If passage through the doorway is needed, simply close the door and disengage The Pet Barrier™.
To Disengage
- Grasp the handle on the barrier attachment bar.
- Gently unhook the curved portions of the two bars.
- Hold the handle as the barrier automatically retracts into the housing unit.
IF THE TENSION ON THE BARRIER BECOMES LOOSE AFTER EXTENSIVE USE
Note: Because The Pet Barrier™ can be mounted bi-directionally; the set screw and clutch wheel may be positioned on the bottom end of the mounted housing unit. If the set screw and clutch wheel are in this position remove the housing unit from the door jamb FIRST and turn the housing unit so that the set screw and clutch wheel are located at the top of the housing unit before you tighten the tension. How to use the clutch wheel to tighten the tension - NOTE the clutch wheel is located on the same end as the set screw and has a ribbed edge for gripping.
- Make sure The Pet Barrier™ is in the disengaged position
- Slightly loosen the set screw located on the side of the housing unit.
- Rotate the clutch wheel clockwise (to the right) until slight resistance is achieved.
- Tighten the set screw.
- Reposition the housing unit on the door jamb
