INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Important:Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE beginning the installation.

What's Included:

  • 1 housing unit with retractable barrier
  • 1 receiving bar
  • 4 small receiving bar screws
  • 2 large housing unit screws
  • 1 Allen wrench (save this for future tension adjustments if needed)

What You'll Need

  • A pencil
  • A level
  • A drill
  • A 3/16" drill bit (housing unit screws)
  • A 5/64" drill bit (receiving bar screws)
  • A Phillip's Head screw driver
  • An awl or nail
  • A hammer

Due to the large number of variations of door frame designs it is impossible to give absolute instructions for installing the housing unit onto a door frame.  The instructions that follow are universal to installing the housing unit to most door frames.

Housing Unit – Installed on the door frame

  • The retractable side must:
  1. Be facing the door opening; AND
  2. Positioned on the door frame so the door opens freely without touching the unit (this may or may not be the center of the door frame); AND
  3. Ideally positioned no more than 1" off of floor surface when properly set onto the installation screws
  • The housing unit should be installed so no side to side play or wobble is allowed (should fit snuggly on the door frame)*
  • Distance between installation screws should be equal to the distance between the top of the slide loops on the back of the housing unit (see illustration below)
  • Use a level to assure a true vertical installation
  • Use an awl or nail and hammer to make pilot holes to assure proper drilling spots
  • Drill holes to receive installation screws
  • Screw the installation screws into the drilled holes on the door frame

*NOTE:  The housing unit should fit snugly on the door frame.  If there is any “play or wobble" between the door frame and the housing unit, adjust the screws accordingly.  If the housing unit is too loose, remove the housing unit and tighten the screws farther into the frame.  If the housing unit does not slide into position because it is hung up on the screws (i.e. screws are too tight into the door frame) then loosen the screws slightly to allow the unit to slide on snuggly.  These adjustments are normal due to several types and styles of door frames.

The Receiving Bar – Installed on the door

To Function Properly – The Receiving Bar must be parallel to the installed housing unit. It is also important that the receiving bar is not positioned too closely to the edge of the door.  Attaching the receiving bar too close to the edge of the door will compromise the ease of hooking the barrier attachment bar to the receiving bar.

  1. On the bottom half of the door, under the door handle, measure approximately 3" in from edge of door and mark a placement spot.
  2. Using a level, draw a vertical line from the placement spot in Step 1 to within a foot of the floor.  This will be the line for installing the receiving bar.
  3. Using the handle on the barrier attachment bar that extends from the installed housing unit, pull out the barrier to the vertical line drawn on the door.
  4. Using the pencil, make a small light mark on the door at the top edge of the barrier material.  Allow the barrier to retract into the housing unit.
  5. Then measure 1 inch down from this point and make a second small mark. (This is the top edge positioning mark for the receiving bar)

With the curve of the receiving bar toward the installed housing unit – and the top edge of the receiving bar at the positioning mark made in Step 5

  1. Align the curved edge of the receiving bar along the vertical line drawn in Step 2 so the vertical line is slightly visible on the curve edge.   If done properly this should position the housing unit and the receiving bar parallel to each other.  BOTH PIECES NEED TO BE PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER FOR EASY USE.
  2. Using the pencil make a mark through the holes on the receiving bar where the screws will be installed.
  3. Use an awl or nail and hammer to make starter holes to assure proper drilling spots
  4. Drill holes to receive small screws
  5. Align the receiving bar over the drilled holes and secure tightly into place with small screws provided.

The Pet Barrier is now ready for use.

How To Use The Pet Barrier™

ALWAYS ENGAGE OR DISENGAGE THE PET BARRIER™ WHEN THE DOOR IS IN A CLOSED POSITION

To Engage
  1. Grasp the handle on the barrier attachment bar (protruding from the installed housing unit on the door frame).
  2. Gently draw the barrier attachment bar over the barrier receiving bar that is secured to the door.
  3. Hook the curved portion of each bar together and release the handle.
  4. Open the door to draw the self-contained barrier from the housing unit. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR MORE THAN 3 FEET WITH THE BARRIER INGAGED AS DAMAGE TO THE UNIT MAY OCCUR.
  5. Close the door and the barrier automatically retracts back into the housing unit.

Once The Pet Barrier™ is engaged it will automatically draw and retract each time you open and close the door.  If passage through the doorway is needed, simply close the door and disengage The Pet Barrier™.

To Disengage

  1. Grasp the handle on the barrier attachment bar.
  2. Gently unhook the curved portions of the two bars.
  3. Hold the handle as the barrier automatically retracts into the housing unit. (Do Not let the handle SNAP back into the unit)

IF THE TENSION ON THE BARRIER BECOMES LOOSE AFTER EXTENSIVE USE

Note:  Because The Pet Barrier™ can be mounted bi-directionally; the set screw and clutch wheel may be positioned on the bottom end of the mounted housing unit.  If the set  screw and clutch wheel are in this position remove the housing unit from the door jamb FIRST and turn the housing unit so that the set screw and clutch wheel are located at the top of the housing unit before you tighten the tension.

The proper barrier tension has been set during assembly. After extended use, slight adjustments to the tension may be needed.  If you choose to adjust the tension, carefully follow the steps below.

  1. Disengage the barrier and remove the housing unit fromt he door fram FIRST
  2. Locate the clutch wheel (the circular disk on one end of the housing unit) and the set screw (located in the small hole on the side of the unit on the same end as the clutch wheel.)  Before you adjust the tnsion, stand the unit on end with the clutch wheel on top.
  3. Tightly hold the clutch sheel with one hand to mainain the current tension on the wheel.
  4. Using your other hand slightly loosen the set screw to allow rotation of the clutch wheel.
  5. Slowly rotate the clutch wheel in a clockwise direction (to the right) until slight resistance is achieved (this should be accoplished with minimal rotation.)
  6. Tighten the set screw until the clutch wheel does not move when you release it.*
  7. Reposition the housing unit on the door frame-it is now ready for continued use.
*In the event you release the clutch wheel during this process you will hear the tension spring completely unwind.  If this happens, simply rotate the clutch wheel in a clockwise direction (to the right) several times to return tension to the barrier.
